According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 9.2 percent of Americans over the age of 12 currently consume illicit substances. Among adults ages 50-64, the rate at which drugs are consumed has more than doubled from 3.4 percent in 2002 to 7.2 percent last year; among adults ages 55 to 59, drug use more than tripled from 1.9 percent to 6.6 percent; and from 1.1 percent in 2003 to 3.6 percent in 2012 among those ages 60 to 64.
